Pastor’s Pen – February 2015

We begin our study of Revelation by looking at the letters to the seven churches. These letters have multiple application. They were directed to seven churches that actually existed, addressing issues within those churches. They address the chronological history of the church which had gone through seven distinct phases, and they also address the composite church with all seven types existing at all stages of church history, including today.

So we need to take note of the warnings given to the churches. These are the warnings:-

  • You have forgotten your first love.
  • You have people who hold to idols and practice sexual immorality.
  • You tolerate false prophets who mislead
  • You have a reputation of being alive but you are dead.
  • You are luke-warm.

We must ensure that Jesus cannot hold these things against us. Rather may we be like the church at Philadelphia of which Jesus said, “I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and not denied my name.

Jesus has given us the promise “to whoever overcomes I will give the right to sit with me on my throne.” What a wonderful promise, to be able to share in the reward that Jesus has earned. Let us not be luke-warm but keep his word and not deny the name of Jesus.
