Pastor’s Pen – March 2015

In Revelation Jesus says to John, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” (Rev 4:1) Just what does John see? Well he doesn’t see the horrendous pictures of war and famine and pestilence that people often associate with Revelation; instead, we find ourselves in God’s throne room witnessing an awesome worship service.

So what’s going on here? Why start with a “church service”? How is that relevant? Why not just get right down to it and tell us about the conflict between the forces of good and evil, between the forces of Satan and the angels of God? But instead we find ourselves being led into God’s throne room.

God knew we had to begin here. In Revelation it is possible to focus on the wrong things; the powers of darkness; the mark of the Beast – 666; the war of Armageddon; and so on. Now Revelation is not the ideal Bible book for children’s bedtime stories and there are some frightening images. But God knew that; and that is why the vision starts at the final destination, the throne room of God.

The images that follow this can be frightening and overwhelming. But remember that our God is bigger than anything the world can throw at us. Nothing can stand against His power. Jesus has already won the victory.

Jesus said “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
